Glossary

Arbiter

This game's equivalent of other games' "Game Master" or "Dungeon Master".

Art

A discipline of magic (e.g. Distortion, Contact, Summoning). Each Art contains spells and spell enhancements unlocked by skill levels. Player characters learn Arts by increasing their Arcane skill.

Circle Magic

A method of pooling mana with allies to cast more powerful spells. All participants must remain in physical contact and contribute mana at ritual speed.

Edge

Roll one extra d6, and take the two highest d6s from the pool.

Entitlement

When an ability or spell grants an effect, that effect is an entitlement: the player may choose any effect up to and including what is described, but nothing beyond it. For example, a spell entitling one square metre of fire could be used to create anything from a candle flame to a solid cube.

Helpless

A creature that can no longer avoid harm. Helpless creatures have no actions or reactions, cannot stand, cannot concentrate, and are automatically affected by anything that targets them. An attacker may kill a helpless creature or render it unconscious.

Inactive Trace

A trace whose spell has expired while affecting a creature. Inactive traces can still be detected but have no effect, and reactivate when the creature rests. Traces on objects simply disappear instead.

Potion Slot

Each creature can only have one potion effect active at a time (increased by Alchemy). Drinking a new potion replaces the current one.

Signature Skill

A single skill chosen during character creation that can be increased without the normal restriction of staying within two points of the category's next-lowest skill.

Spell Enhancement

An upgrade that affects your spells, unlocked by skill prerequisites within its Art. When casting a spell you may use any or all spell enhancements you know that apply to that spell.

Speed

How long an ability takes to use. There are four speeds: Action (two per turn), Attack (at most one per turn), Reaction (one per round, triggered by conditions), and Ritual (too slow for turn-based mode).

Trace

A permanent spell effect that persists on a creature or object without requiring concentration or mana. All player characters start with the special trace Spellcasting, which allows them to use magic. Creatures can hold up to two traces; objects can hold one to three depending on material.
